Königswinter – The British German Conference
New Head for British Königswinter Board
From October British diplomat Sir Michael Arthur takes over as the UK chairman of the British-German Königswinter conferences. Königswinter is the longest established post war British forum of its kind.
Sir Michael is just finishing as British Ambassador in Berlin. He was born on August 28 1950 and was educated at Balliol and St Anthony’s College, Oxford; he has been in the diplomatic service since 1972, serving twice in Germany. He is married with four children.
As the UK chairman of the Königswinter committee he succeeds Lord Watson of Richmond CBE.
The annual series of Königswinter conferences are held alternately in Britain and Germany. This year the 60th will be held in London from September 16-18. The meetings have played a pivotal role in strengthening high-level contacts between our two countries. Over the decade Königswinter has established itself as the key forum for serious policy debate in Anglo-German relations, bringing together leading participants from Government, the public and private sectors, the media and business. The Conference looks forward to continuing its leading role in German-British policy dialogue over the coming decade, as Britain and Germany work ever more closely together in the wider world.

Jubiläumskonferenz: Die 60. Königswinter Konferenz, 16.-18. September, Goodenough College, London
Im September sind erneut je 40 deutsche und britische Führungspersönlichkeiten aus Politik, Wirtschaft und den Medien zur bilateralen Königswinter Konferenz eingeladen, um gemeinsam über aktuelle Themen und bevorstehende, globale Herausforderungen zu beraten. Mit der 60. Königswinter Konferenz setzt sich eine langjährige Tradition des offenen bilateralen Austauschs fort, der die wichtigste Plattform des deutsch-britischen Dialogs darstellt. Die Königswinter Konferenz wird von der Deutsch-Britischen Gesellschaft in Kooperation mit dem britischen Partner UK Koenigswinter veranstaltet.
Die diesjährige Jubiläumskonferenz steht unter der aktuellen Fragestellung:
“HARTE ZEITEN, HARTE ENTSCHEIDUNGEN: SIND WIR ZU HARTEN LÖSUNGEN BEREIT?”
In drei Diskussionsgruppen werden von deutschen und britischen Führungskräften folgende Fragen diskutiert:
Sind Demokratien handlungsfähig: Wie bewältigen wir die schlimmste Rezession der Welt? Was sollte die EU in Europa und außerhalb tun? Abstieg und Verfall: Verliert der Westen seinen Einfluss?
In den vergangenen 60 Jahren haben viele deutsche und britische Persönlichkeiten aus Politik und Wirtschaft an dieser renommierten Konferenz teilgenommen, für die der Austausch mit britischen Amtskollegen und Partnern eine große Bereicherung bedeutete, und die durch ihre späteren Berufswege zu großem Ansehen gekommen sind. Zu den Teilnehmern der vergangenen Jahrzehnte gehörten unter anderem Helmut Schmidt, Helmut Kohl, Gräfin Marion Dönhoff, Ralf Dahrendorf, Kurt Biedenkopf, aber auch Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, auf britischer Seite Nigel Lawson oder Douglas Hurd.
Anlässlich der diesjährigen Jubiläumskonferenz sind im September neben aktuellen Spitzenvertretern auch frühere Teilnehmer und langjährige Begleiter der Königswinter Konferenz eingeladen, über sechs Jahrzehnte deutsch-britischer Beziehungen zu resümieren. Zu den eingeladenen Königswinter Alumni gehören unter anderem Richard von Weizsäcker, Theo Sommer und Michael Stürmer.

Anniversary Conference: The 60th Königswinter Conference: Goodenough College, London, 16th-18th September
In September 2010, 80 British and German leaders and representatives from the fields of politics, economics and the media are invited to take part in the renowned Königswinter Conference, where they will debate current issues and develop strategies to deal with the global challenges both countries are facing. The 60th Königswinter Conference continues a longstanding tradition of open bilateral exchange, which makes Königswinter the most important platform for British-German dialogue. The Königswinter Conference is organised by the Deutsch-Britische Gesellschaft in cooperation with its British partner UK Koenigswinter.
The title of this year’s anniversary conference is:
“TOUGH TIMES, TOUGH CHOICES: ARE WE PREPARED FOR TOUGH SOLUTIONS?”
The British and German participants will discuss the following topics in three study groups:
Can democracies deliver: How do we recover from the world’s worst recession?
What should the EU do in and around Europe? Decline and fall: is the West losing its influence?
A large number of German and British representatives from the political and economic sphere who have participated in this conference over the past 60 years have declared this face-to-face exchange with their British counterparts and partners an important platform for bilateral dialogue. Many of the participants moved on to high ranking positions later in their career. The list of participants of earlier Königswinter Conferences include the names of Helmut Schmidt, Helmut Kohl, Countess Marion Dönhoff, Ralf Dahrendorf, Kurt Biedenkopf, as well as Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, on the British side there are Nigel Lawson or Douglas Hurd amongst other high ranking names.
On the occasion of this year’s anniversary former participants are invited to attend the final plenary of the Königswinter Conference to reflect on 60 years of British-German relations. Among the invited Königswinter alumni are Richard von Weizsäcker, Theo Sommer und Michael Stürmer.
