Governance of the Gesellschaft lies with the Governing Board. It determines the guidelines under which the Gesellschaft operates. All board members are appointed on a honourary basis. Its members are:
Dr h.c. Gebhardt von Moltke, Former Ambassador to the United Kingdom

Gebhardt von Moltke studied Economics and Law from 1958-63 in Heidelberg, Grenoble, Berlin and Freiburg im Breisgau. After passing the first state examination he completed his practical legal training from 1963-67. Upon passing the second state examination he joined the German Foreign Service in 1968. From 1969-71 he was a staff member of the Foreign Minister's office in Bonn, 1971-75 he was employed in the Economic Department of the Federal German Embassy in Moscow, 1975 at the embassy in Yaunde/Cameroon and from 1977-82 in the Personnel Administration of the Federal Foreign Office in Bonn. Gebhardt von Moltke spent the years 1982-86 in Washington as a staff member in the Federal German Embassy's Political Department. Until 1991 he headed the German Foreign Office's US department in Bonn. From 1991-97 he was Assistant Secretary General of NATO for Political Affairs in Brussels. From 1997-99 he was German Ambassador in London. 1999-03 he was the Permanent Representative (Ambassador) of the Federal Republic of Germany on the North Atlantic Council (NATO) in Brussels.

Since 2001 Sven Rawe is Managing Partner of Steltemeier & Rawe GmbH, a strategy consulting firm specialising in Public Affairs & Public Policy. He is co-founder and a partner of the charitable German Institute for Public Affairs (DIPA) in Berlin as well as co-publisher of the "Handlexikon Public Affairs“ (Concise Encyclopedia Public Affairs) and of the journal "Public Affairs Manager“. Prior to that he worked for a Frankfurt-based PR agency in the field of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs. Mr Rawe also was a staff member of the European Centre for Comparative Government and Public Policy in Berlin and worked for the news channel n-tv. Sven Rawe studied Political Science at the Otto-Suhr-Institute of the Free University Berlin. At the University of Sussex, Brighton (Great Britain), he earned a masters degree in Contemporary European Studies (Sussex European Institute).
Tim Arnold

Tim Arnold was born in Wuppertal in 1969. After winning the history competition of the German Federal President in 1988, he was admitted into the German National Academic Foundation. Additionally, he won the Herbert-Weichmann-Medal of the Körber Foundation for two reports from the GDR. Tim Arnold read Economics and Political Sciences. Es is an alumnus of the London School of Economics and Political Science, the John F. Kennedy School of Government (Harvard University) and of the Ecole Nationale d’Administration. In 1997 he joined the Bertelsmann AG as Assistant to the Chairman of the Board. From 1999 to 2002 he was Head of Communications and member of the management board of the Bertelsmann Foundation.

Rupert Graf Strachwitz, Managing Director, Maecenata Management GmbH

M.A., born in 1947, has been involved with not-for-profit organizations for well over 30 years – as a volunteer, staff member, board member, consultant, and researcher, and lecturer. Since 1989, he has been managing director of Maecenata Management, a consultancy that specializes in foundations and associations, corporate citizenship and philanthropy, and since 1997, he has also been the director of the Maecenata Institute for Philanthropy and Civil Society, now affiliated to Humboldt University, Berlin. He studied Political Science, History, and History of Art at Colgate University, Hamilton, NY, USA, and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet, Munich, Germany. He graduated as an M.A. in 1974 with a thesis on The Levellers, a 17th century English citizens’ action group. After serving at World Headquarters of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (an international catholic disaster relief and medical aid organization) in Rome for 2 years, he became regional director for the Order of Malta Relief Service in Bavaria. Subsequently, he held a position in public life while serving on the board of a number of foundations as well as other NGOs, including German Caritas, where he was Vice-President in 1984/85. After becoming an independent consultant in 1989, he became increasingly involved with Third Sector research and chaired the German advisory committee of the Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project from 1995-00. Today, while still acting as a consultant, his main focus is on research and public policy to do with civil society and philanthropy. From 1999-02, he served as member of the German Federal Parliament Commission on Civic Action. He chairs the European Policy Working Group of Europa Nostra, and sat on the board of the Fondazione Cariplo, Milan/Italy (from 2000-07), and a number of other nongovernmental organizations at home and abroad. His approx. 300 publications, in German as well as in English, Italian, French, Chinese, Japanese, and Polish, include books and articles on foundation issues as well as cultural policy, the third sector, and civil society.
Siegmar Mosdorf, former Parliamentary State Secretary, Partner and Chairman CNC AG Berlin

Siegmar Mosdorf is Partner and Chairman of CNC AG in Berlin. From 1999 to 2003 he was the Chairman of the Board of the Deutsche Ausgleichsbank and currently carries out various duties. He also is a lecturer at the University of St. Gallen. From 1998 to 2002, he was Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Ministry for Economics and Technology, and worked as aerospace co-ordinator for the Federal Government. Between 1990 and 2002, Mr Mosdorf was Member of the German Bundestag and Member of the Committees for Economics, Transportation, Research, Technology, Foreign Affairs and Sport. Until 1990, he was the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) whip for the State of Baden-Württemberg. Between 1995 and 1998, he was Chairman of the Enquiry Commission for "The Future of the Media". Mr Mosdorf was a consultant in trade union affairs to the Works Council and Supervisory Boards of Daimler-Benz, Bosch, IBM, HP and Porsche from 1978 to 1982. He studied Economics, Law and Social Sciences at the University of Constance.
Dr Bernd-Albrecht von Maltzan, Divisional Head Private Wealth Management, Deutsche Bank AG

After studying Economics and earning his doctorate at the University of Bonn Dr. Bernd-Albrecht von Maltzan joined Deutsche Bank in 1978. He spent three years at the branch office in Cologne and for another three was Secretary to the Spokesman of the Managing Board, Dr F. Wilhelm Christians. In 1985 he became First Vice President Corporate Finance of the Deutsche Bank Capital Corporation in New York. In April 1990 he joined the Management of the Mannheim branch office as head of the Stock Exchange Department. In 1993 he transferred to Frankfurt and became Director Procura in the Management of "Trading and Sales“, becoming Head of Investment Banking for Germany in 1995. In 1996 he became active in retail banking customer affairs as Divisional Head and Global Head Private Banking. In May 2002 Dr von Maltzan was named Divisional Head and Vice Chairman Private Wealth Management Global. He advises many German family enterprises in business affairs. Furthermore Dr von Maltzan is active in many international charitable organisations: he is Chairman of the "Königswinter Stiftung“ and Founding President of the "American Berlin Opera Foundation“, New York. In 2006 he received an honourary award from "Elysium – Between the Two Continents“, a transatlantic cultural organisation. He was recently appointed to the Board of Trustees of the "Heidelberg Center for American Studies“. This organisation provides graduate and post-graduate education opportunities for non-US students.
