The UK, Germany and the EU in the world: Where are we heading?

14. November 2018 17:00

The Rt. Hon. Baroness Williams of Crosby, Botschafter a.D. Dr. Hans-Georg Wieck

With a potential emergency EU summit in November looming and just a month away from the last European Council of 2018, we have invited The Right Honourable Baroness Williams of Crosby to try and give answers to the question: The UK, Germany and the EU in the world: Where are we heading?

While UK politics are almost entirely focussed on BREXIT, Germany has had its own shake ups of the political party landscape in 2018. There are many topics up for discussion: the post-BREXIT relationship between the UK and the EU27, the bilateral relationship between the UK and Germany, and the EU’s role in a world where the traditional world order continues to erode.

Minister Stefan Ludwig will introduce into the evening. The lecture by Baroness Williams will be the impulse for a conversation with Ambassador Dr. Hans-Georg Wieck, moderated by Hans-Henning Horstmann, Ambassador and Chairman Deutsch-Britische Gesellschaft.

The event will be followed by a reception.

Once forecast to become Britain’s first female prime minister, Dame Shirley Williams is one of the leading politicians of her generation (The Independent). Originally a Labour MP and Cabinet Minister, she became one of the Co-Founders of the Liberal Democrats and served as the Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords from 2001 to 2004. From 2007-2010 she acted as an Adviser on Nuclear Proliferation to Prime Minister Gordon Brown. She retired from the House of Lords in 2016 and is currently Professor Emerita of Electoral Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She is also on the Board of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), based in Washington DC and she is a member of the European Leadership Network, which concerns defence and security.
