Is a diplomat’s life really as glamorous as a royal visit, or as dramatic as a coup d’état in Turkey? Leigh Turner is a former British ambassador who led posts in Ukraine, Turkey and Austria. In a witty globetrotting adventure through one of the most intriguing careers a person can have, Leigh will talk about his interactions with royalty of both the aristocratic and celebrity kinds, and with brilliant and extraordinary people, and the lessons we all can draw from this – whether aspiring diplomats or non-diplomats. Based on his new book “Lessons in Diplomacy: Politics, Power and Parties“; (Bristol University Press, September 2024, published in German by Czernin Verlag as “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Diplomacy: Wie Diplomatie die Welt erklärt”) Leigh will do a deep dive into key lessons such as “How to survive a crisis”, “How to handle politicians”, and “How to know people”. Have you ever wondered what diplomats and ambassadors really do? Leigh Turner will be happy to explain.
Leigh will also be prepared to sign copies of “Lessons in Diplomacy“; after his talk.

The new British government is set on introducing sweeping changes to the way the government functions. The whole system of public governance is up for discussion. The Future Governance Forum, a privately funded, independent civil society organisation which describes itself as „more than a traditional, policy-focused think tank“, has been active in developing ideas and strategies for these changes since 2023. They are of particular interest to a German audience, since a group of large foundations sponsored an initiative called Initiative für einen handlungsfähigen Staat that published a report in 2025 which does not seem to have resulted in any concrete action.
Adam Terry, the forum’s executive director, will share his thoughts on what the British government is proposing to do. Helmut Anheier, formerly a professor at the London School of Economics and later President of the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, will offer some comments.

The event will be held in English and will be chaired by Rupert Graf Strachwitz, Board Member of the Deutsch-Britische Gesellschaft.

Please join the event by using this link: (No prior registration required!) https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86053497711?pwd=gxgUxhQ9ePdD8M4KXjyfTVsZkLY02f.1

Helmut K. Anheier is Senior Professor of Sociology at the Hertie School. He served as President of the Hertie School from 2009 to 2018. He is also a member of the faculty at the Luskin School of Public Affairs University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His research centers on indicator systems, governance, culture, non-profits and philanthropy and organisational studies. He received his PhD from Yale University in 1986, held a Chair of Sociology at Heidelberg University´s Max Weber, fulle professor at UCLA’s Luskin School, a senior researcher at the Johns Hopkins University’s Institute for Policy Studies, and Centennial Professor at LSE, and Associate Professor of Sociology at Rutgers University. He is author of numerous publications, many in leading journals and has received various national and international awards. Before embarking on an academic career, he served as Social Affairs Officer at the United Nations.

Adam Terry became The Future Governance Forum’s Executive Director in July 2026, having served as Deputy Director since the think tank was launched in 2023. He joined FGF from the Labour Party where he was Head of Policy Development, overseeing the party’s democratic policymaking processes and their contribution to manifesto development, and setting up the party’s 2021-23 policy review. He previously worked as Head of Policy in the Shadow Treasury Team and as senior adviser to Anneliese Dodds in both Westminster and the European Parliament. He started his career in the UK civil service, helping to plan the 2012 London Olympics, managing capacity-building programmes with the Afghan government at the British Embassy in Kabul, and serving in the Prime Minister’s Office in 10 Downing Street. He has also worked in both the charity sector and the private sector.

A joint event by the Maecenata Foundation and Why Philanthropy Matters, in cooperation with the Deutsch-Britische Gesellschaft.
Join us for an online discussion with a distinguished panel of global experts to explore how efforts to delegitimize civil society are playing out across the globe, and what steps we can take together to defend civil society – and democracy – against further attacks.

In many countries, civil society organisations (CSOs) are facing growing attacks on their legitimacy. Autocrats and populists accuse them of being ‘enemies of the people’ or ‘tools of hidden elites’, and have used these arguments to justify new laws and policies which restrict vital freedoms of free speech, free assembly and the right to protest, thus shrinking the space in which civil society is able to exist.
Worryingly, this no longer seems to be the preserve of autocrats. We are increasingly seeing more moderate politicians follow the same path. Where once these figures might have recognised, or even championed, the role CSOs play within a healthy democracy in standing up on issues and speaking truth to power; some of them now choose instead to see civil society as a threat to their own power, and to echo populist narratives which undermine its legitimacy.
Against this challenging backdrop, it is vital to understand what lies behind attacks on civil society legitimacy, how they are being propagated, and what we can do to counter them.

In this timely event, we will hear insights and perspectives from a panel of global experts, including:

Catherine Anite, human rights lawyer, Uganda

Marwa el-Daly, American University Cairo, Egypt

Rhodri Davies, Why Philanthropy Matters, United Kingdom

Benjamin Gidron, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Israel

Mark Sidel, University of Wisconsin-Madison and International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL), United States

Rupert Graf Strachwitz, Maecenata Foundation, Germany

The session will be chaired by Ansgar Gessner from the Maecenata Foundation and will be recorded.
There will also be the opportunity for participants to ask questions and to join the discussion.
If you are interested, then please sign up using the link below. You are also welcome to share this invitation more widely in your networks.
