Britain and Germany – Britain and Europe (Some Observations and Comments from David McAllister MEP)

12. October 2022 18:00

David McAllister MEP

Britain has a new King and a new government, who both took office very recently and within days of each other. Europe is waiting to see what this will mean in terms of the UK’s relationship with the EU. Will the UK and the EU be able to forge a security alliance strong enough to face Russian aggression and transatlantic uncertainties? And how will the new PM handle the post-Brexit details, such as the controversial Northern Ireland Protocol Bill? Germany in particular is eager to resume a relationship with the UK that is based on trust and close interaction in many areas.

David McAllister is singularly well suited to comment on the current challenges the relationship between Britain and Germany and between Britain and Europe is facing. A European politician born in Berlin in 1971 of a Scottish father and a German mother, he was raised bilingually and began his school training at a British school. After serving in the German Army he studied in Germany, receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Edinburgh. A lawyer by profession, he was Member of the parliament of Lower Saxony from 1998 to 2014, and served as Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister from 2010 to 2013. He has been Member of the European Parliament since 2014, where he chairs the Committee on Foreign Affairs and serves as Co-Chair of the UK Contact Group. He has also been a Vice President of the European People’s Party since 2015.

The event will be held in English and chaired by Rupert Graf Strachwitz, Vice Chairman, Deutsch-Britische Gesellschaft.
