New Year’s Reception

22. January 2019 18:30

Stefan Schilbe

Members and guests of the British Chamber of Commerce in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia Region and of the DBG in Düsseldorf are cordially invited to visit HSBC Germany (“HSBC”) at 18:30 on Tuesday, 22 January 2019.

As many children wait for “Santa Claus” their parents may well be looking to see if events might bring a number of political “Christmas gifts” wrapped perhaps as a “successful outcome of the Brexit negotiations”, a “resolution of the quarrel between EU and the Italian coalition”, more “harmony in the US congress”, an “easing of the trade conflict between US and China” and in an ever more complex world potentially many more that could be named.
After the festivities have ended, the EZB’ announcement to bring the QE program to a halt suggests an economy back to normal in 2019. Growth forecasts, however, in the EU have being revised downwards not just because of Brexit impact expectations, so it remains to be seen how buoyant consumer spending will be over the festive period
With this backdrop in mind, we are delighted to again be invited to HSBC’s Headquarters in Düsseldorf to hear the views of their Chief Economist, Stefan Schilbe on what we might expect in 2019. Herr Schilbe will elaborate on the current economic environment and the possible impact of recent political and economic events on economic policy in the coming year.

After gaining a Masters in economics at Cologne University, Stefan joined HSBC where he rose to the position of Director of Treasury before becoming Chief Economist.
