Matthew Lewis

King Richard III is one of the most infamous monarchs in British history. Immortalised by William Shakespeare as his ultimate villain, he also has a vibrant Society dedicated to the study of his life and times. The Richard III Society is over a century old and has members across the world. So Matt Lewis will ask, who is the real King Richard III? Is he an ambitious monster who murdered his way to the crown and had his young nephews put to death too? Or is he the accomplished governor respected in the north of England whose legal reforms in Parliament during his brief reign attract praise and have a real legacy to this day? Although he ruled for only just over two years, why does Richard III attract such interest, both hostile and sympathetic, in the present? Matt Lewis will seek to explore the complex character and story of Richard III and answer the questions about this controversial monarch you’ve always wanted to ask.

Matt Lewis is an author and historian with a focus on the Wars of the Roses in 15th century England. Matt has written several non-fiction books, including biographies of Richard II: Loyalty Binds Me, his father, Richard, Duke of York: King By Right, Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine: Founding an Empire, and Henry III: Son of Magna Carta. He is also the author of The Survival of the Princes in the Tower, which explores the theories that Richard III’s nephews were not murdered in 1483. Matt works at History Hit, where he co-hosts the Gone Medieval podcast, hosts the Echoes of History podcast, and presents documentaries focussed on the medieval period. Matt has previously been Chair of the Richard III Society.
