Synopsis:
The British Royal Collection is one of the finest art collections in the world and one of the few still fully managed as part of the household of a reigning monarch. One major part of the Collection is the Royal Library, based at Windsor Castle since 1830, which as well a major and historic collections of books and manuscripts also curates the collections of orders and decorations acquired over the past two hundred years.
The Collection has been enriched by the long and diverse connections between Germany and Britain; in particularly through the exchange and sharing of Orders and Decorations, most especially the iconic Order of the Garter. These items of fine craftsmanship and quality, reflect family, dynastic, and political connections from the 17th-century until the present day including the State Visits of King Charles III to Germany in 2023 and of President Steinmeier to the United Kingdom in 2025. Since the early 19th century, the Collection has been enriched from across the world including the German states; decorations have been used as a diplomatic currency between realms, states, and families.
The fully illustrated lecture will present the wid-reanging narrative of interconnections and the highs and lows of relations through portraiture, decorative arts, and insignia over the past years.
