Andy Pelkiewicz
In this presentation, Andy Pelkiewicz will be telling the extraordinary story of the development of British pop and rock music in the 60s.
It starts with the death of rock and roll and moves on to the extraordinary rise of The Beatles, British rhythm and blues, the British invasion of the USA, the Summer of Love, and it ends with the development of new genres of British music that dominated the world.
It will also link this development to the major changes in British society in that decade.
The presentation will include extracts from important songs of the period, and a few personal favourites.
Biographical Notes: Many members of the Deutsch-Britische Gesellschaft Rhein-Neckar will know Andy as the Treasurer and the technical guru who tries to ensure that all meetings run without a hitch. He has also presented to three meetings with current political themes.
Andy was born in Wakefield in the early 50s and first took an interest in pop music with the coming of The Beatles.
He presents a monthly radio programme on bermudafunk in which he plays a selection of music – mostly rock and pop, but often wider – and gives interesting descriptions of the songs or performers. It is broadcast on the first Monday of the month at 14:00, and can be found in the bermudafunk mediathek.
Andy moved to Heidelberg in 2010 with his work – he was an actuary – and he has been retired for the last 10 years, keeping busy with his radio programmes, the DBG and playing badminton and bridge.
Admission is free to members; non-members are requested to make a donation of EUR 5 towards expenses (“Unkostenbeitrag”).
Out of consideration to the speaker and audience, please do not eat during the talk but either before or
afterwards. Please come in good time to order and get your drinks before the talk starts.
