Stephen Walton

There has been an Anglican Christian presence in Düsseldorf, in one form or
another, since 1850. In that time, Christ Church has grown from a mission
work amongst coal miners to an expatriate English church, and now into a
thriving international Church. My talk will look at the past, present, and future
of Christ Church, against the background of the history of the Church of
England, and its relationship with the German churches. We will look at what
the Christian faith can give to our divided and uncertain Europe, and the part an
English-speaking church might play in this.

Stephen Walton is the chaplain of Christ Church Düsseldorf. He was born
and grew up in Cornwall, in the South West of England, and studied Modern
History at Merton College, Oxford University. After university he lived in an
L’Arche community in London for a year, and then worked for the charity
Mencap, as a care worker for people with learning disabilities. He then studied
theology at Oak Hill Theological College in London, and was ordained in the
Church of England in 2002. He was a curate at a church in Leicester for four
years, and then for eight years vicar of Marbury, Tushingham, and Whitewell,
three churches in rural Cheshire. In 2015 he moved to Düsseldorf with his
German wife Gunilla and their three children. At the moment, he is working for
a Master’s Degree in Historical Reformed Theology from Westminster
Theological Seminary, Philadelphia.
