“The 10 Leadership Challenges from Horatio Nelson” by Nigel Cushion FRSA

25. Juni 2026 19:00

Synopsis:

In 1805, Admiral Horatio Nelson achieved one of the most significant naval victories in British history at the Battle of Trafalgar, defeating the combined French and Spanish fleets during the Napoleonic Wars.

Prior to the battle, he inspired his sailors with the famous signal: “England expects that every man will do his duty.” This message not only boosted morale but also reflected Nelson’s belief in responsibility, loyalty, and commitment to a common cause. Tragically, Nelson was fatally wounded during the battle and did not live to witness the full extent of his victory. Nevertheless, his sacrifice and leadership transformed him into a national hero whose reputation has endured for more than two centuries. The presentation will examine three key aspects of Nelson’s life: it will explore why Nelson became such an important national hero in Britain, it will analyse Nelson’s distinctive approach to leadership and it will consider Nelson’s lasting legacy and the ways in which his achievements continue to shape British history, culture, and national identity today.
