The Channel Islands, the EU, the UK, and Germany

10. Dezember 2025 18:00

Jim Robinson (Government of Jersey London Office), Alexander McKenna (Government of Jersey), & Rebecca Millar (Channel Islands Brussels Office)

The Channel Islands consist of the Bailiwicks of Guernsey (Guernsey, Alderney Sark) and Jersey, each of which is a self-governing, autonomous dependency of the British Crown. They are located just off the Northwest coast of France, in the English Channel, but geographically closer to the coasts of Brittany and Normandy. They also maintain a different relationship with the UK to that of the Overseas Territories. As self-governing parliamentary democracies, the Islands have the power to determine their own laws, set their own taxes, and hold elections.
Since Brexit, their relationship with the EU has changed; presenting both challenges and opportunities for trade, regulation, and international cooperation.

Our speakers will provide an overview of the islands’ political and economic connections and discuss how these relationships can be further developed with the EU and Germany in particular, as they seek to define their role in a post-Brexit Europe.

The event will be held in English and will be chaired by Rupert Graf Strachwitz, Vice-Chairman of the Deutsch-Britische Gesellschaft.
